The Little Prince Chapter 13
Imagine a universe where there is a boy that hops with them curry’s from his planet to another meeting people each with a different purpose in life. This is what happens in The Little Prince, a work of fiction, written by Antoine De Saint-Exupery, especially In chapter 13, the author shows the universal theme that systems work to complete a task or mission by creating parallels by criticizing the greed, stubborn persistence, pointlessness of a capitalistic economy.
First of all, Chapter 13 relates to systems because of how much greed the businessman contains. The businessman has so much greed for the stars that he believes he owns every single one then buys them once a new one is discovered. In pg.31 the businessman refers that at o"I administer them," replied the businessman. "It does me the good of making me rich." This is similar to a capitalistic economy because of the greediness of the businessman and of an investor is to keep making money. In an article titled “Money, Greed, and Barter of the Soul “ , it states, “Greed for money is no different. It is unnatural and leads to an imbalance in the psyche of the individual.” As seen of the businessman lonely and tired because all he tries to do is make more money and own more stars, like an investor would like to earn more money so he can own more things.
Secondly, Chapter 13, relates to system because of the stubborn persistence that the businessman has, as he tells the prince that he is dealing with other things much more important than him, he continues to count his stars with the prince right in front of him not even bothering to turn to him. In Chapter 13, he tells the little prince, “Oh, no. Little golden objects that set lazy men to idle dreaming. As for me, I am concerned with matters of consequence. There is no time for idle dreaming in my life." The businessman is counting stars and stating that this is a matter of consequence, but for what point? The chapter explains his planet as an lonely planet that only has him with a great big desk and a paper in front of him. It is pointless for him to even become rich when it is just him and no one else in a lonely planet. So as he does think of this as a matter of consequence, the little prince might be thinking differently as, there is no point to maintain these stars. In an Article, “7 Habits of Highly Persistent People”, the author of the Article states, “Persistent people have a goal or vision in mind that motivates and drives them. They are often dreamers and visionaries who see their lives as having a higher purpose than simply earning a living.” This can relate to the businessman because in Chapter 13 there is no purpose to but he keeps on going. He thinks the only purpose for him is to count the stars around his planet and after that to continue counting the stars. This also leads to why counting the stars for him is pointless.
Lastly, In Chapter 13, the businessman is striving for a goal that is pointless. His goal is to become the richest and claim all which he states when the Little Prince asks what he is doing. In chapter 13, the businessman and the Little Prince argue, "And what good does it do you to own the stars?" "It does me the good of making me rich.” "And what good does it do you to be rich?" "It makes it possible for me to buy more stars, if any are discovered." When the businessman and the little prince argue, the little prince tries to dignify that even if the businessman becomes richer and richer it is pointless because there is no one else to go against since he is the only one in his planet. He does not need money because in the future he will still be in the same position just with more money, even though he is striving for better. In the article, “#40 — The Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor Are Getting Poorer”, it states “Wealth can better be imagined as a growing pie, or better, a growing ecosystem. Of course, wealth doesn’t always grow, but it tends to—as long as people have the incentives to be productive. Merit and hard work tend to be rewarded in this growing pie, but rewards more generally accrue to those who create value for others.” This meaning that since he is working hard it is rewarding him and he is growing but it's pointless for him to get richer as he cannot share the wealth, it's his planet -- he does not need the wealth and the businessman is just doing this for no particular reason.
In conclusion, the little prince is a story that can be interpreted many ways and shows many different kinds of points of views as it does when it shows the point of view of the business man. Our chapter, chapter 13, relates to systems because throughout the chapter businessmen counts stars like money, how his planet and mind is much like a system today, and how he works for the same ideal as a system. This matters to us because in the real world, we treat many things as he does. Whether its school, working, or doing something in our daily life we all strive for better and work by something. Working - we work by an economy system, School - we work by an educational system, or just governmental or exercising our right - we work by a law and justice system. We all incorporate systems into our life some way or another just like him and I believe it’s important to point that out not only in the story but also in us too.
